What's so important about skin pH?

Here we go. Some very simple, easy to follow skin science so you can better understand your skin. Because...healthy skin is a healthy YOU!

Six reasons why it's important to maintain a healthy pH balance in your skin.

1. Skin Barrier Function

The skin's outermost layer, called the stratum corneum (how's that for scientific terminology), acts as a barrier to protect your body from external factors like bacteria, pollutants, and irritants.

You might be surprised to know that this barrier function is optimized when the skin's pH is slightly acidic, typically around 4.5 to 5.5. A healthy pH balance helps strengthen this barrier, reducing the risk of infections, inflammation, and sensitivity.

The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 7 being "neutral". Numbers below 7 are acidic, while above 7 are considered alkaline or non-acidic.

2. Acne Prevention

Maintaining an appropriate pH level can help prevent acne. Acne-prone skin often has an elevated pH, which can promote the overgrowth of acne-causing bacteria. Keeping the skin's pH within the optimal range can discourage bacterial growth and reduce the occurrence of acne breakouts.

3. Moisture Retention

Balanced pH levels are essential for maintaining the skin's natural moisture content. An acidic pH helps the skin retain moisture by regulating the function of the stratum corneum. When the skin's pH is disrupted, it can become dry, flaky, and more prone to irritation and damage.

4. Skin Sensitivity Reduction

Skin that is too alkaline (high pH) can be more prone to irritation, redness, and inflammation. A balanced pH can help reduce sensitivity, making the skin less susceptible to environmental irritants and allergens.

5. Anti-Aging Benefits

Maintaining a healthy pH balance can also support anti-aging efforts. An acidic pH helps to promote the natural exfoliation of dead skin cells, which can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time. Additionally, a strong skin barrier can prevent the penetration of harmful substances that can accelerate skin aging.

6. Product Effectiveness

The pH of your skin can affect the efficacy of skincare products. Using products with a pH that is too high or too low for your skin can disrupt its natural balance and reduce the effectiveness of certain ingredients. Using products with a pH compatible with your skin can enhance their benefits.

To maintain a healthy pH balance in your skin, it's important to choose skincare products that are pH-balanced, like toners! This is one of the main reason why we recommend incorporating a toner into your skin care routine. Shop our selection of toners.

Additionally, avoid overusing harsh cleansers or exfoliants that can disrupt your skin's pH, and consider consulting your aesthetician for specific product recommendation for your skin.
